Transparent BG

What is Transparent Background Image?

Observe the following three Santa images. One is with background another is without background and the last one is .gif file.

.gif Example

To have only Santa cutout , the file must be saved as .gif or .png format after hiding the background layer visibility in Photoshop. Images, backgrounds and all other graphics must be created using layer in Photoshop and the file must be saved in .psd format. From .psd formated file we can create files in other formats using File >> Save As Option.
To convert to .gif or .png file formats from a .psd file:

1. Open a .psd (Photoshop Document ) consisting of layers.
2. Click on Eye Icon to hide the visibility of all unwanted Layers including background.

3. Go to File and choose “Save As” option.

4. In Save As dialogue box, select file format as CompuServe GIF(*.gif) or PNG and click “Save” button to save .gif or .png formatted file in to the required location on your computer drives.
5. Close the .psd file without saving the changes.

Editing .gif or .png Files

Follow the procedure to edit the .gif format files.
(1) Open the .gif or .png file in photoshop.
All .gif extension files will have “Indexed” color mode.In indexed color mode we can’t create layers. Colors applied on Indexed mode files will turn to gray. Hence we need to change the mode.
(2) Goto Image >> Mode and chose RGB.
(3) After making required modifications to .gif file in RGB mode, again goto Image>>Mode and chose Indexed color Mode. (For .png format files there is no need to change the mode)
(4) In “Flatten layer?” dialogue box click ok button if you do not want layers.
